Asymmetry for you and me!

So, here's a question that will put you to sleep.

Do socks really have to match?

I just finished this:

I love the yarn (Colinette's Jitterbug--Fire).
I love the pattern (Go With the Flow from Interweave's Favorite Socks).
But I suffer from Second Sock Syndrome. (Which is not unlike lactose intolerance on the Half-baked Afflictions List.)

I'm thinking the Go With the Flow would look nice matched up with a Monkey. Or a Pomatomus. Or a Lombard Street.

Do socks really have to match?

You look so sweet when you're sleeping like that.

Every time I draw or paint faces, I'm in the same mess. My artwork has evolved into an army of women with one eye, tiny slit-like eyes or abnormally cartoony eyes. Not an artistic statement, just can't draw two that match.

Robin! I am in love with your stuff on Toe Gristle! I had no idea! So talented.

Socks do not have to match if you wear them as a hat.

I have one skein of Jitterbug. I'll either have to make heels, toes, and cuffs out of a different yarn, or sell it. I can't stand the thought of making two socks from 291 yards. That's less than 150 yards per sock! I have size 10 feets! Grr.

So when I saw you ask, "Do socks really have to match?" I thought you were talking about knitting two completely different colorways. Sigh.

Not only do I not feel socks have to match, I work to make sure handmade socks don't match exactly. How I do this varies by the pair. In self-patterning yarn, I've been known to start at the opposite end of the color repeat; or I've reversed cables or lace panels, and the like.

So, if I were in your position, I probably would pick a different pattern, though I'd probably pick one that would look similar to the one I'd already made - in this case, something with an equally strong vertical element. And then I'd see how many people noticed.

My socks never match. I make it a point to unmatch them...or I'm just lazy.

Holy crap, I've got to get that book! I'm kind of in a knitting funk, so much yarn, so little urge to knit it...

I have that same problem. That's why it takes me six months to literally finish a single pair of socks. I thought that I would be cute once and work on two pairs at once, but then I just ended up with two single socks that don't match.

Go cast on right now! Before the urge to start a completely new project grabs on!

Actually, I think as long as they're the same colorway, it's probably cool. And really, knitting is not supposed to be stressful, so if knitting 2 different patterns is what keeps you excited, then go for it. Besides, I always figure how much are people really paying attention to my socks anyway?

my 6 year old NEVER wears matching socks, i find it quite endearing.

pomatomus would be cool... though the dummy leg is weirding me out

Absolutely not - then you don't feel guilty when you can't find the other one and have to sacrifice the sock to the laundry shelf or the Good Will bag for lack of a mate.

Bossy doesn't believe in matching anything. She is virtually match-less.

I've really screwed myself. Not only do I not want to not finish this second sock, it's the second pair in a row that I've knit from the same pattern. I want to take a Bic lighter to them.

No, they don't have to match at all.

I have a 4 year old that firmly believes socks should not match. She used to think the same about shoes. One of my sisters actually purchased a set of socks for her that contained 3 different but complimentary socks. She loves them!

Eccentricity is highly underrated. Mismatched socks are "quaint." Every time I go through that book, I am underwhelmed, but then I see somethng that someone else made from the patterns, and I love it! Your sock looks awesome.

Quite a stimulating question, actually. As long as the socks are knit in the same colorway (or 2 extremely similar colorways) I don't think they have to match. A Monkey sock would go nicely with the Go with the Flow. I'm currently knitting a sock with Jitterbug (colorway Alizarene??, label is smeared! gaahh!) and liking this yarn very much.

    absolutely unequivocally not.

Can you actually fit shoes over socks that thick? And aren't they really hot? I don't think that I could wear thick knitted socks.

No to matching socks! Yes to less boring knitting!

And there is really nothing more boring than the second sock (unless it is the second sleeve when everything else on the sweater is done).

Jafer--I live in clogs, so the socks work well. They're surprisingly comfy.
